Shielding
Broad experience has made RPS the leader in ionizing radiation shielding services. Once dedicated to the nuclear division of the U.S. Navy, we began over 35 years of service to commercial utilities as an emergency response team called to Three Mile Island.
Our engineering staff has more than 100 man years of experience in custom design of shielding through the application of lead, steel, water, borated plastics and other materials.
The provided links below outline some of our recent projects and show why, after more than 35 years, RPS remains the leader in shielding applications.

Counting Cave (Shielding)
The epoxy coated, seal welded shielded cave surrounds the frisker probe to shield background radiation for on-site use. The cave has an opening 4” wide x 6 ½” high x 11” deep and 2” steel shielding on five sides. It has an angular hole in the back face of cave for the probe wire and threaded holes with removable lifting eyes for cave handling. Available with a shielded door.
The shielded cave may also be mounted on a heavy duty epoxy coated, welded structural steel mobile cart on four casters (two rigid, two swivel locking) that is easily relocated to the work site. The top of the cart supports the cave with space for the monitor and information recording. It also has two lower shelves for storage.
The probe holders are stainless steel and maintain uniform distance from probe to sample.

Currently available for:
- Ludlum Model 43-93
- Ludlum Model 43-5
- Ludlum Model 44-9
- Holders for other models available upon request

Mobile Shield Walls
Mobile Shield Walls are constructed of 1″ – 4″ thick lead encased in stainless steel. There are nine interlocking panels: seven panels that are 11′ 6″ tall and two panels that are 8′ 6″ tall. Each panel is equipped with a handle for moving into position and rolls on two inline wheels. The floor track is a key locking design with three direction changes and there are two top end tracks to steady the panels. The tracks are adjustable to align with the floor.

Lead Wool Blanket Rack
- Engineered to carry up to 2,160 pounds of lead wool blankets (6 layers of 1′ x 6′ blankets at 15 lbs./sq. ft.).
- Rigid casters on one end, swivel casters with brakes on the opposite end.
- Interlocks with additional racks for use as a shield wall.
- When two or more racks are used, blankets can span from one rack to the next, minimizing streaming between the sections.
- Epoxy-coated.
- Standard size: 48″ wide x 80″ high (nominal).
- Other sizes available upon request.

Frisking Booths
Standard Booth
The Standard Frisking Booth is constructed of 1/4″ – 3″ thick lead sheet panels encased in epoxy painted carbon steel. Cable penetrations are fitted with caps to prevent streaming. The booth can be shipped as an assembled unit, or disassembled for assembly on-site.

Shielded Booth
The Shielded Frisking Booth is a welded one piece construction. It is also available in lead (1/4″- 2″ thick) encased carbon steel painted with epoxy. The panels are cap screwed into the deck as well as bolted together, and the ramps move up and down. The roof is optional. The booth is movable by both forklift and crane, and comes pre-assembled or on pallets for assembly on-site.

PCM Shielded Booth
The PCM Shielded Frisking Booth is a welded one piece, epoxy coated, carbon steel construction with internal shield walls on either side of the entrance that pivot to allow for maintenance. The booth is primed and painted and has a 3′ wide x 3’ 6” x 7’ high shielded area with a shielding thicknesses of ½ to 3” steel. It features a 304 stainless steel shelf for a portable monitor and service ports as required (not pictured). The booth has a 115vac receptacle and a single point electrical connection (not pictured). It also has a light with a light switch (not pictured). The booth is movable by both forklift and crane.

LWB Booth
The Lead Wool Blanket Frisking Booth offers the conveniences of portability and adaptability. Shielding attenuation can be regulated by the installation of standard 1′ x 4′ Lead Wool Blankets in the areas of interest. The booth frame can be easily handled when no lead wool blankets are installed. The booth sections are of welded construction. The sections are bolted together to form the booth. The structural steel frame is epoxy coated or powder coated. Blanket support rods, spaced every 4”, are located at two levels to support the blankets. The blanket walls can be 1 to 4 layers thick. Blankets can be laid on the top frame section to create a shielded ceiling. The standard booth measures 36″ wide x 48″ deep x 96″ high and can be disassembled for storage.
